The 28th Iowa Infantry was organized at Iowa City, Iowa and mustered in for three years of Federal service on October 10, 1862.
The regiment was mustered out on July 31, 1865.
A total of 1195 men served in the 28th Iowa at one time or another during its existence.[1] It suffered 6 officers and 76 enlisted men who were killed in action or who died of their wounds and 3 officers and 186 enlisted men who died of disease, for a total of 271 fatalities.[2]
